Quote of the Day

The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time – Bertrand Russell

365 Days to a Balanced Life – Day 26

I know people who hate to waste a dollar.  They will drive two hours roundtrip to save $20 on an item.  I don’t get it.  I would rather go without the item or pay $20 more and spend the two hours doing something enjoyable.

We all know that the most precious thing we have is time.  Yet we all seem to fritter it away in so many unfulfilling ways.  Commuting, working at something we don’t like, relationship disputes, cleaning already clean houses, worrying, surfing the net aimlessly and the biggest wastes of time; gossiping and watching Reality TV.

If we pay attention,  our bodies will tell us if our actions are in alignment with our priorities.  If you feel stressed in some way, you are not living in a way that reflects your highest priorities.  This will eventually take a huge toll on you, physically, mentally and emotionally.

It is helpful to identify where you are spending your time (and how you feel while you are doing it).  Keep track for a week or so, this will help you determine how much time you spend doing activities that nourish and enrich you.

You may find you only have to make minor adjustments to reach a level of fulfillment, others may see this as a time to make some serious changes.  Is spending two hours commuting to a job you don’t like how you want to spend your life?  Can you hire a part time assistant to do the jobs you really don’t like to free you up to leave the office earlier or take more time off?  Here is a big one for most families; hire a cleaning lady instead of fighting over the housework.  Bonus,  you save time in two areas, fighting and cleaning.

Much of our stress comes from doing things we don’t like to do or are not very good at.  Get creative and find ways to get the essentials done or maybe even lower your standards.   Sometimes we spend time doing very unimportant things at the expense of spending time with our children, spouses and friends.

Half the time men think they are talking business, they are wasting time” – Edgar Watson Howe

Take the time to really examine your priorities and fit them into your schedule by tossing the unnecessary tasks.

Go out and have fun!
