365 Days to a Balanced Life – Day 25

One of my walking buddies, Candy, gave me a suggestion to pass along to everyone.  She uses a technique known as the Power of 10. It is very simple.  If you are feeling overwhelmed by all that you have to do,  tell yourself to do just 10 things.  For example;

The house is a mess and you are exhausted – pick up 10 items only.  Usually you will find that the feeling of being overwhelmed will pass and you might just power through and get it all done.  If you don’t,  that’s ok too.

Your desk has a mountain of paper that you just don’t have the energy to tackle – take the top 10 and do them.

You need to get at your taxes done but can’t face the large task, tell yourself that  you can do anything for 10 minutes.

I have used this technique with exercise.  I make a deal with myself that I can quit after 10 minutes.  I rarely do.  After the first 10 minutes I usually start to feel great and keep myself going with additional 5 minute intervals and soon I’m at 30 or 45 minutes.  If I had started the session with the rigid thinking of having to work out for an hour or more I probably would have procastinated.

The key here is to break it down into manageable bites.  Try it, it really works!
