365 Days to a Balanced Life – Day 3

I plan to incorporate three – five  new routines a week into my lifestyle.  Usually there will be one from each category, Mind, Body and Soul.  This week is meditation for 30 minutes a day, a daily walk and the benefits of starting my day with warm water and organic lemon juice.

LEMON WATER – This is one of the most important things we can do for our body upon rising (before food or coffee).  For all the reasons listed below.

Apart from being an amazing body alkalizer, lemon water also gives the following health benefits:

  • Lemons are antiseptic
  • Lemon water has excellent digestive properties and can ease heartburn, bloating and other digestion problems
  • Lemon water cleanses and stimulates the liver and kidneys
  • Lemon juice contains calcium, magnesium and potassium
  • Lemon juice has been known to relieve asthma
  • Lemon water (hot) offers relief from cold and flu symptoms while providing some much needed Vitamin C
  • Lemon juice is a great skin cleanser

WALKING – I find that unless I fit this in first thing in the morning, it doesn’t happen.  For efficiency, I schedule walks with my friends as a way to catch up while getting outside for exercise.  Living in Vancouver we have the rain to contend with, making going outside at times unappealing.  I used to make it an excuse (sometimes still do) but I have joined a local group, Fresh Air Fitness’s pole walking group who generally go rain or shine three times a week for 90 minutes (we call ourselves chix with stix).  I love this group of ladies and because we chat through the entire hour and a half, the time goes quickly!!  For those living in the area check out Jenn and the Fresh Air Fitness ladies!

Walking outside is as good for my soul as my body.  Being in nature has an amazing affect on my mood and energy.  I used to hike several times a month but for some reason I have developed a fear of bears and this is keeping me from enjoying the amazing trails around my home here on the North Shore of Vancouver.  I am working on this and plan to join Fresh Air Fitness’s hiking group as well.

At a recent cardiologist’s appointment, I was told that walking is for pleasure only and that it really has no affect on keeping your heart healthy.  He recommended jogging three times a week to get my heart rate up.  I am not sure I buy this (you will find that I challenge what traditional medical practioners say – this makes me a difficult patient).  At the very least he told me to use an elliptical trainer or my Bowflex Cardio machine rather than a treadmill.  I am still looking into this advice and will let you know my findings. In any event I will continue to go on daily walks but perhaps add three 20 minute Bowflex Cardio a week to give my heart an additional workout.   Feel free to post your comments about this.

MEDITATION- This is a tough one for me.  Calming my mind is a concept I have not fully embraced.  Even though I have read numerous testimonials and personally seen the results, I still think sitting still doing nothing for a half hour is a waste of time.  Having said that, I  am dedicated to starting the practice of meditation on a daily basis.  I will keep a journal to record any changes this practice will have on my life.  I am thinking for me that first thing in the morning is the best time before my lemon water and walk :).  I have purchased a set of meditation recordings that claim they will have me meditating like a Zen monk.  We’ll see.
