Be Grateful

Quote of the Day

“Only a stomach that rarely feels hungry scorns common things.” — Horace

365 Days to a Balanced Life – Day 16

Gratitude is a state we all strive for but can seldom hold ourselves in for long.  Like everything else it takes practice to be truly grateful.  Many people look at my life and think I live a charmed life.  I used to defend myself by giving them a list of hardships and situations I had to overcome and continue to deal with to get to this “charmed existence”.

The fact is most of us born in North America won the lottery of life.  We start out with better odds of living fulfilled and relatively safe lives.  It is what we do from there that matters.  Many people are not aware that their daily decisions affect their overall quality of life in the long term.  The choices we make in how we look after our bodies, our minds and our souls on a daily basis matter greatly.

We take for granted that we have a healthy body and rather than be grateful for it every day and nourish it properly, we abuse it on a daily basis.  We eat and drink (or smoke and snort) things we know are harmful but somehow we do not connect how this neglect shows a lack of gratitude for what we have.

For the most part, we live on automatic pilot, rarely stopping to appreciate the relationships we have.  We take for granted that these people will be there when we have time to enjoy them.   We forget that everything is in a constant state of change and that the relationships we have today evolve and often we miss the best of them when we forget to focus on them on a daily basis.  We forget to be grateful for the value that each and every one of our relationships adds to our lives.

We miss the fact that enjoying nature for a few minutes a day will immensely add value to our lives in the form of relaxation and peace of mind (not to mention Vitamin D and Oxygen).  We don’t take the time on a daily basis to sit by the water or in the woods and breathe in the air and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings that we surely should grateful for.

We don’t take the time to nourish our minds and souls through education and selfless acts of kindness.  We forget that one day our minds may not be capable of holding thought or that our bodies may not have the strength to help others.

My new daily habit is to write down  five things I am grateful for each day in a gratitude journal.  I am told that if I do this for at least one month it will change my life forever. “The gratitude journal truly changed my life.” – Oprah Winfrey  If it is good enough for Oprah, its good enough for me!

I’ll let you know in 30 days what changes occur and I would love to hear from you the impact this has on your life.
