365 Days to a Balanced Life – Day 183   (the half way mark)

Quote of Day

” Be moderate in order to taste the joys of life in abundance” – Epicurus

I have not been keeping up with my blog consistently as I have been facing a few challenges and they have thrown me for a loop.

The official diagnosis is pending but it looks like I have Rheumatoid Arthritis.  I had a very painful flare up last week that kept me bedridden for 36 hours unable to even dress myself. To tell you the truth it scared the hell out of me and made me realize that I no longer have the luxury of youth on my side.  If I don’t get it together with some consistency, I most certainly will face a painful old age (if I’m lucky enough to even have one). I did suspect this was coming because I had been experiencing general stiffness, pain and other symptoms for several months but continued to live in denial when I could have been doing something about it (I actually couldn’t face yet another health issue).  Since I believe in treating the cause not the symptom, I have been researching what changes I have to make to reverse this disease and prevent future flare ups.

The first question I needed to ask myself was what caused this?  Certainly stress plays a huge part but another even more important culprit is diet.  Even though 80% of my diet is “clean”, I do still indulge in sugar, alcohol and other unhealthy choices (I would hate to think how I would feel if I didn’t eat well and exercise though!).

However, the time has come for me to practice what I preach!  For many years I have referred ailing people to Dr. Robert Young’s book The PH Miracle – Balance your Diet, Reclaim Your Health.  I know it to be one of the most effective ways of healing disease, the science being that disease cannot live in an alkaline system.  I have always said that if I ever had a serious health issue I would follow this proven program to give myself the best chance at reversing disease.  I wish I had followed my own advice years ago so that I could have prevented many of the health challenges I am now facing (I guess I didn’t think a stroke was serious enough :) ).

I have known for some time now that the years of high stress would eventually catch up with me and that if I didn’t make some serious changes in my diet and lifestyle I could find myself in trouble.  Knowing this has lead me to research many lifestyle and holistic health remedies over the years.  I have tried enough to know what is hype and what is the real deal.   I believe The PH Miracle to be the real deal.  So why haven’t I been walking my talk you ask?  Good question.  The only answer I can come up with is fear of giving up so many of the things I love.  When I was relatively healthy it seemed like such a drastic step to take.  It doesn’t seem drastic to me at all today.  It seems necessary to reclaim my health and live a high quality life in the future.

In fact the PH Balance diet is simple in that you eliminate acidic foods (coffee, tea, dairy, sugar, red meat, chicken etc) in favor of alkalizing foods such as vegetables, low sugar fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, good oils and freshwater fish.  You drink PH balanced water (VERY IMPORTANT) and test your PH daily.  There is more to it than that obviously but those are the basics.  As you can see it will take dedication to follow this program (the green juice in the morning will be my biggest challenge) but I have no choice given that I am sick and tired of watching (and feeling) my body deteriorate at a rapid pace (and early age) no matter how much I try to eat right, exercise and reduce stress.  My current diet, although better than the average diet, is still creating an acidic terrain and disease loves it!!

As I was rereading the PH Miracle for the third time this week it struck me that mood imbalances are closely linked to dietary choices.  It seems to me creating balance in your mind would be difficult if not impossible without a balanced body.  So why do most of us start with meditation and breathing to calm the mind?  Why not work on calming and balancing our system with the nutrients and proper hydration our body is crying out for?

We can’t keep popping a pill to fix the damage we are doing to our body.  In most cases drugs may treat the symptom but in the long run they just deteriorate the body in other ways.  Take a look at people who are on medication.  It usually starts with one drug but soon a host of other illnesses and symptoms crop up and before they know it they are downing several prescription meds a day.  At some point we all pay the price for not taking control of our health and just following the advice of our doctors who are primarily influenced by the studies sponsored by the pharmaceutical companies (not my doc though :) -Hi Greg!).  Not enough of us are asking ourselves what alternative solutions are out there and most importantly, what the root cause of the illness is.

We learn in the PH Miracle that the terrain is everything.

Dr. Antoine Bechamp and Claude Bernard, taught that the biological terrain (a person’s psycho-physical-biochemical balance as reflected in the immune system) was the most important factor in whether a person remained healthy or developed acute or chronic disease

This way of understanding disease is distinctly different from the current allopathic model, which is based on the theory of Louis Pasteur of one pathogenic organism – one disease approach.  On his deathbed even Pasteur himself refuted it stating Bernard was right, the terrain is everything.  This represents the core of the debate between holistic approach to disease, which reflects a body-mind- spirit pleomorphic approach to preventing and healing disease, and the allopathic – symptom focused approach to disease.

So once again I’ll become my own lab rat and immediately make some changes.  I will start by drinking Alkaline water and eliminating as many acidic foods as possible.  I will begin checking my PH levels and take the supplements recommended by Dr. Young.  Come January I will take the one month challenge and completely dive into the program.  From what I have learned about Alkaline Water I should start to feel results within a few weeks.  I have read many testimonials and have also seen friends have huge health benefits from the PH Miracle Diet but now I will get to see firsthand if the results are as dramatic as they claim.

I’m now out of the denial state and am making the preparations to embark on yet another major lifestyle change in the New Year.  I want to give myself the best chance to succeed so I am not attempting to turn my kitchen upside down during the Christmas Season (other than the normal holiday chaos).  Plus I need one more year of indulging in my famous shortbread cookies!
