365 Days to a Balanced Life Journey – Day 126

I can’t believe it’s been 5 days since my last post.  I have been in a whirlwind of getting ready for my six week trip to Australia.  I had to cook an early Thanksgiving dinner for 12, prepare the house for a renovation, get waxed, massaged, toes painted, nails extended and do the dreaded packing.  And we all know my problem with packing light.

I am ashamed to admit it but I did it again.  I had all the best intentions of leaving Vancouver with one suitcase and a carry-on.  Then I decided that I needed two in case I bought things (Christmas is coming). In an effort to appear to be packing light I bought a combination purse/computer bag as my carry-on, but then I discovered if you put a computer and cords in a bag like this it reduces the room for all the other junk I carry in my purse.  Where was I going to put my two books, magazines, playing cards, snacks, makeup, vitamins, hand sanitizer, pens, notebooks, I pod, phone, essential oils, melatonin and more.  So you guessed it I added another bag but I wouldn’t take a real suitcase with wheels I decided a small leather duffle would do.  Big Mistake.  By the time we got to LA for our 13 hour lay-over (not a typo),  I was already struggling under the weight of carrying two heavy bags (Kali also had a heavy backpack with a computer).  How were we going to hang out in LA for the day with no Jack to carry them? (and thanks to the bloody terrorists no storage lockers to put them in)

You guessed it.  Our newest addition to our luggage collection is a very beautiful (and expensive) computer case/overnighter on wheels that actually clips on nicely to my big cases At the end of the six weeks it will be a gift for Jack (I have to justify these things somehow).

My daughter and I swore we were not going to shop in LA but after touring UCLA, walking the Promenade to Santa Monica Pier and lunch we still had 10 hours to kill.  Shop therapy and a make-over at Nordstrom gave us that adrenaline rush we needed to keep going until our midnight flight.

Now I am sitting in the airport lounge trying to separate my daughter’s purchases from mine and stuff them into our respective carry-ons as we will sadly be going our separate ways in Auckland.  She is going on a 7 week school exchange and I am going to Australia to continue my Journey for Balance. (The solitude portion).

I would travel non-stop if it weren’t so damn tiring.  I have been up since 4am for my first flight at 8am, 13 hours in LA and we will board at 11:45pm for the 14 hour flight to Auckland where we will wait 5 ½ hours for Kali’s connecting flight.  I will continue on to Australia the following morning.  Not only do we lose a couple of days traveling we also fast forward to October 7th.  Life’s too short to skip ahead like that.

My next post will be from Melbourne Australia.
