365 Days to a Balanced Life Journey – Day 114

Quote of the Day

“I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex and rich food.  He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself” – Johnny Carson

Even though I am totally committed to this lifestyle change, it sure does feel like I’m “giving up” many things I used to enjoy.  Initially I was resistant to some of the changes, worried I was going to end up being someone that did not resemble me at all and that concerned me because I like me and the life I have created.  Slowly I came to realize that just like some friends (and lovers), everything has it’s time and place in our lives.  For me indulging in some of the “anti-foods” I used to eat and the unhealthy choices I used to make just does not serve me at this stage in my life.  I feel sooooo much better when I avoid those yummy desserts and that extra glass of wine and I feel sooooooooooooooooo much worse when I don’t.  My body and soul has become addicted to exercise.  When I skip a day or two I can see a noticable difference in my state wellbeing.  This new way of living is steadily becoming the only way I want to live now.

A week or so ago I wrote that we were going to turn off the TV for a week to avoid the negativity injection that sometimes comes from undisciplined television viewing.  I was surprised when Jack said he would go along with the experiment and not surprised when my 15 year old daughter refused.  She was restricted to the TV in her bedroom.  Given that she is a typical teen caught up in Facebook, Skype, texting and hair straightening, she really watches alot less TV than we do.  Teenagers today seem to be more connected then we were with our friends but rarely is it face to face.

During our TV hiatus we found that we went to bed earlier and read more.  We probably averaged 1-2 hours extra sleep a night.  This was an unexpected bonus.  I don’t know whether we benefited that much from the lack of “negativity” as a week is not long enough to really see significant changes but we are more conscious of our choices.  With the new fall lineup we are not motivated to continue our experiment but have decided to not watch TV in the bedroom.  No more falling asleep listening to Frasier!

I also started eating fruit on an empty stomach this week.  This is harder than not watching TV.  You always crave what you can’t have,  I find myself timing my meals around fruit gorging.  I will give this a good try so I can determine if it really makes a difference in my bodily functions and overall health but I am unsure if I can keep it up indefinitely.  I love my fruit!!!

Another little tip I was reminded of yesterday was using spices to fend off cancer!  Turmeric, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, pepper, oregano and rosemary are the best.   Turmeric is especially important for shutting down pancreatic cancer cells and turning off colon cancer.  So I’m adding more curries and yellow mustard to my diet.

I am trying to devise a way to keep all this straight.  The vitamins, the fruits  and veggies I need to eat daily, the spices, the exercises, the meditation, the essential oils, the mind movies, the day sculpting ( formerly known as scripting).  For my trip to Australia I am creating a check list that I must routinely go through on a daily basis.  I know from the past 113 days of experience, everything will fall into place as these changes are converted into habits.

Gotta keep this short today, my stomach is finally empty enough to be able to eat fruit without fermenting :)
