365 Days to a Balanced Life Journey – Day 107

Quote of the Day

“Our mortality gives life a sense of urgency” – John Izzo

I am always fascinated by the endless number of books, articles, blogs, websites and now eBooks available with information to help people live better lives. I am equally fascinated by the number of people who do not read them. I am not saying that every book out there is worth reading (believe me, I’ve kissed a few frogs), but I usually am able to find at least one usable idea even in the worst of them. I know I live the extreme of this, I buy so many books that there is no possible way I can read them all. I have even found myself with two (and three) copies of the same book. Eventually I might even read one of the copies.

My friends tell me I should use the library more. I am not a library person,  I find they put too many restrictions on me. First of all I have to wait to get a popular book, then I have to read it in a defined period time and then they expect me to return it on time (or at least within the year). Most irritating is that they charge me when I highlight favorite passages. I have been known to take out books using one of my kid’s cards because I was on the “Never Again” list at the local library. I recall the time my teenage nephew was visiting and needed to get a book from the library to do a project. He came back empty- handed – no book and no library card (they confiscated it). Plus he had the feeling he was followed home.

But I digress. What I started out to explore is why so many people do not avail themselves of the information that is out there. Information that will show them how to; enlighten their minds, improve the quality of their daily lives, save their marriages, keep their kids from wearing an orange jumpsuit, finally forgive their mothers (I have several on this topic) and most importantly, find the secret (s) to a happy life.

A lot of people claim that they don’t have time to improve their lives. Does that sound as odd to you as it does to me? Who doesn’t have time to make a better life for themselves? One extra smile a day is an improvement. We all have time; we just don’t take the time. If we have time to watch a reality TV show, we definitely have time to turn our reality into something special and rewarding.

As John Izzo says in his book, The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die, “We have a limited and undefined amount of time and almost unlimited number of choices of how to use our time. What we focus on and put energy into ultimately defines our life. Our mortality gives life a sense of urgency.”

Many of us live life in daily opposition to the wisdom we already have. Knowing is necessary but it is not enough. We have to take the steps to create the changes you need to make.

What we pay attention to grows.
