365 Days to a Balanced Life Journey – Day 64

Quote of the Day

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” – Melody Beattie

I might have mentioned that my husband Jack and I started to regularly tell each other what we appreciate about the other.  As usual our intentions were to do this daily but soon we were hitting and missing.  That’s ok.  Out of the blue one of us will email, text or simply say what we appreciate about our relationship.  It has softened some of the edges that inevitably develop over time.  I notice I am not bitching as much at him (soon I hope to report that I never bitch) and he is then able to move out of the defensive position which allows him to make changes himself.

After ten years I was rewarded this morning with him telling me that he feels he’s finally starting to “get it”!!!!  This is such great news for us.  I have felt like I have been pushing and pulling him along and frankly it got tiring.  I would like to say it was something profound that I said that finally helped him “see the light” but it really was as simple as us practicing all this stuff that I have been writing about.  It is about the repetition of these habits that really starts to have an impact on your daily life in small insignificant ways at first but I can see there is a snowball effect.

This is exciting.  Day 64 and I’m starting to vibrate on a different level.  I feel it.  That doesn’t mean I don’t slip into my old negative thinking pattern sometimes or that I don’t bitch or feel overwhelmed.  It just means I am making significant progress, more than I have ever made before, simply by focusing and being aware.

Here are a few of the small daily changes Jack and I have made that are making a huge difference:

.

New Habit

On waking we think positive thoughts about the day and run through the things we are grateful for (in our minds)

.

Old Habit

Groan and think about all we had to do that day

.

New Habit

The first thing we say to each other is something positive, even if we sometimes have to force ourselves.

.

Old Habit

Complain about what hurts

.

New Habit

Eat nutritious Clean Food

.

Old Habit

Eat whatever was handy without much thought of nourishment

.

New Habit

Visualize how we want the day to go (the Mind Movies have really increased our results)

.

Old Habit

Fly by the seat of our pants

.

New Habit

Make time to talk or play games

.

Old Habit

Watch TV

.

New Habit

Try to work in a walk

.

Old Habit

Watch TV

.

New Habit

We end the night with positive thoughts, gratitude and loving words

.

Old Habit

Complain about being tired

Remember to cut yourself some slack.  You are not and never will be perfect. Just keep trying and the rewards will be there making it easier every day to drop some of the old habits.  Remember it has taken me 64 days of paying attention to my life all day every day,  to start to really see significant results.  Maybe that’s the secret to The Secret.  :)
